Following its global unveiling, Kia has once again put their latest EV model in the spotlight by hosting a special ‘World Premiere’ event for the all-new Kia EV9. Unlike the previous unveiling, where the automaker only revealed the design aspect of the car, Kia has now finally disclosed the specifications for its first-ever three-row electric SUV.

For starters, the Kia EV9 will come in three variants, namely the Standard RWD, Long Range RWD, as well as the range-topping All-Wheel Drive (AWD) variant. The baseline Standard spec is primed with a 76.1-kWh battery pack, while both its up-specced twin carry a bigger 99.8-kWh pack instead.

In terms of power, the Standard RWD variant is powered by a rear-mounted single motor layout, with a total system output of 215 HP (160 kW) and 350 NM – good enough to propel it from nought to 100 KM/H in 8.2 seconds. Meanwhile, the Long Range RWD model boasts a de-tuned single motor layout rated at 201 HP (150 kW) and 350 NM, for the sake of better efficiency and longer range. This, in turn, grants the Long Range RWD model a slower 0-100 KM/H sprint time of 9.4 seconds.

On the other hand, the range-topping AWD model is the sole variant offered with a dual-motor setup that delivers up to 378 HP (282 kW) and 600 NM, granting it the fastest 0-100 KM/H sprint finish of only 6 seconds.

Granted, these performance figures are not ‘mind blowing’ by any stretch of the imagination. To combat this, Kia has now introduced a new “pay to play” scheme for the AWD model, where buyers can subscribe for a “boost” feature via Kia Connect Store. This subscription grants their EV9 with an extra power boost to the AWD model’s front motor torque peak – increasing its total torque output to 700 NM.

This “power boost” subscription plan is said to be available in both one-time purchases and monthly subscription, with its pricing to be variable depending on the regional market. Aside from this, the Kia Connect Store app also comes with other added features for the EV9, including the over-the-air (OTA) software update service, as well as the feature to play around with the EV9’s ‘Digital Pattern Lighting Grille’.

Furthermore, Kia also revealed that the EV9 will get a GT Line treatment “in the future”. Aside from a slew of visual upgrades, the EV9 GT Line will also be the marque’s first-ever model to come with Kia’s proprietary Highway Driving Pilot (HDP) system – a Level 3 autonomous driving system that utilises up to 15 sensors and two LIDARs to scan and detect objects in a full 360-degree field of view.

The all-new Kia EV9 is set to make its public debut in the upcoming Seoul Mobility Show 2023 later this month, followed by a North American premiere at the 2023 New York International Auto Show early next month. Pre-orders will be opened in Q2 of 2023 for the South Korean market, with sales for selected global markets poised to commence from the second half of the year onwards.

As for the pricing, Kia has yet to disclose them, but expect them to be heftier than the EV6.
