GWM Malaysia officially announced that order books for its new Cannon Ultra pick-up truck are now opened. Bookings can be placed with authorised GWM dealers nationwide now and, though the firm didn’t disclose any price details, a figure of RM127,800 was previously leaked by a dealer.
Previewed during the Malaysia Autoshow 2023 earlier this year, the GWM Cannon Ultra is set to woo avid pick-up truck fans through its rich list of on-board features. Recently, the firm also took to social media to reveal that the first batch of 66 units have made landfall, likely meant to fulfill any initial orders it seems.
Powering the truck is a promising 2.0-litre 4-cyl turbo-diesel offering 163 HP and 400 NM. It’s paired with an ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic and intelligent four-wheel-drive (4WD), the latter offering four selectable drive modes. Certainly, the first-in-segment tailgate step will be a huge draw for avid truckers.
In-cabin features include the rich use of soft-touch materials, digital instrument (7-inch) and infotainment touchscreen (9-inch) displays, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, electronic gear shifter and parking brake, a three-pin socket, rear A/C vents, as well as power-adjustable front seats.
Notably, the GWM Cannon Ultra promises Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assist too, the feat largely stemming from the presence of an adaptive cruise control (ACC), autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane-keeping assist (LKA), blind-spot detection (BSD), as well as a 360-degree parking camera module.
Clearly, the GWM Cannon Ultra is specced to sell, and the fact that GWM recently saw its 500,000th Cannon model roll off the line since its 2019 debut is an indication of its respectable market performance. In fact, in its Chinese home market, the Cannon held a near 50% market share between Jan and July this year too.
Apart from price, GWM Malaysia also didn’t indicate when it will officially launch the GWM Cannon Ultra. Given that the firm has now begun accepting orders, we reckon we won’t have to wait much longer.
In the meantime, check out our gallery of the Cannon in both workhorse P11 and passenger-focused P12 forms below.
