Renault is reviving the Twingo nameplate as an affordable EV supermini hatch

Renault has a pretty ambitious plan regarding its electromobility adoption. Aside from reviving its 20th century rally icon, the Renault 5, the French national automaker is also planning to produce one of the most affordable new EVs as part of its bid to go against the burgeoning Chinese marques in the European market.

Say hello to the all-new Renault Twingo – an all-electric supermini prototype that is set to be produced as the marque’s cheapest EV model to date. Arriving as the fourth-gen iteration of the Twingo nameplate, this EV supermini features quirky retro-inspired design reminiscent of the 1992 original.

For starters, the Twingo prototype sports similar semi-circular headlights and taillights design as we saw on the original Twingo back in the 90s, albeit with a modern take. Other than that, the front windscreen angle matches the incline of its short front hood, which blends together to create the old Twingo’s signature single-box proportions.

The fourth-gen Renault Twingo EV will get a more practical five-door layout

Unlike the original, however, the new Twingo EV prototype adopts a more practical five-door layout. In spite of boasting longer body length and wheelbase, the new Twingo’s proportions still look identical to its three-door predecessors, thanks to both the hidden rear door handles and the extended rear windscreen. Adding some extra sportiness to this supermini are the flared-out wheel arches and the sizable wheels it rides on.

Renault, however, has yet to disclose any details regarding the powertrain and battery specs of this urban EV, though the French national automaker claims the new Twingo EV to have “best-in-class efficiency” of 10 kWh/100 KM. Though yet to be confirmed, the new Twingo will most likely underpin Renault’s proprietary AmpR Small EV architecture – a new name for the CMF-BEV platform used on the new Renault 5 EV.

The Twingo EV will join Renault's new Ampere EV lineup, alongside the Renault 5 EV, amongst others

Engineered and manufactured in Renault’s European production facility, the all-new Renault Twingo EV prototype will be part of the marque’s new Ampere EV lineup, which comprises models like the aforementioned Renault 5 EV, Scenic E-Tech, Megane E-Tech Electric, and many more.

Once the Twingo hits the production line later in 2026, it will be one of the most affordable new EVs by a European marque, with Renault targeting a starting price below the €20,000 (RM100,000 approx.) before subsidies. Should Renault manage to hit this targeted price range, the new Twingo EV will have a slight edge against other European A-segment EVs like the VW ID.1, Citroen e-C3, and Fiat Panda.
