In the final quarter of the year, BYD has surpassed Tesla as the leader in the electric vehicle (EV) market, selling 526,409 all-electric cars compared to Tesla's 484,507. Both companies have exceeded their annual estimates, with BYD reaching over 3 million and Tesla 1.8 million in sales for 2023.
BYD achieved a record-breaking fourth quarter by selling 942,651 cars, with 55% being fully electric (BEV) and 45% plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). The company discontinued the production of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in April 2022.
For the entire year of 2023, BYD sold 3,023,679 electric vehicles, a 62% increase from 2022, with 52% being BEVs. Tesla delivered 1,808,581 vehicles in 2023, marking a 38% increase from the previous year. While Tesla still leads in cumulative sales for 2023, BYD is expected to maintain its position as the top EV maker in 2024.
Initially started as a battery manufacturer, BYD entered the automotive industry in the mid-2000s and is often compared to Tesla. Despite being backed by Warren Buffett, the two companies differ significantly in their products and business philosophies. BYD relies on a vast dealer network for international expansion and domestic sales, in contrast to Tesla's online direct sales model.
Furthermore, unlike Tesla's sleek interiors and advanced features, BYD cars have a more traditional design with physical buttons. BYD prioritises research and development in batteries, emphasising affordability and providing substantial value for the price.
Looking ahead to 2024, BYD plans to launch more new models and explore new territories by establishing two new EV brands – YangWang and Fang Cheng Bao. Tesla, on the other hand, has just launched the facelifted Model 3 ‘Highland’, with the updated Model Y slated to be launched in H2 2024. In Malaysia, BYD has the Atto 3 and Dolphin for sale, with the Seal to be launched later this month. Meanwhile, Tesla Malaysia has both the Model 3 and Y currently on sale.
