Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) is kicking off 2024 on a high note by announcing the availability of yet another upgraded version of the eighth generation (Mk 8) VW Golf GTI. In its latest 2024 model year guise, the locally assembled (CKD) hot hatch has gained several new kit.
According to VPCM, the 2024MY VW Golf GTI is now endowed with a brand-new heads-up display (HUD). This should prove to be a nice visual treat for drivers as it projects vital data on the windscreen whilst helping drivers to maintain their driving vision both forwards and on the road.
The next new addition for this staple and segment-defining hot-hatch is a brand-new Harman Kardon premium audio system. The 10-speaker setup boasts a 480-watt rating that “pushes out an immersive surround sound experience and deliver impressive acoustics,” according to VPCM.
Beyond these additions, little else has changed since the last round of upgrades. As a refresher, VPCM added the Volkswagen brand’s IQ.Drive active driving assist (ADAS) suite, plus honeycomb-shaped LED fog lamps, when it last updated the assembled-in-Pekan hot hatch back in March last year.
There also seems to be no changes mechanically, so buyers still get the same peppy 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged 4-cyl petrol mill and slick 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic box. The former drives the front wheels with 245 PS (242 HP) and 370 NM, thus enabling 0-100 KM/H in just 6.3 seconds.
Lastly comes the ‘upgraded’ price, and the latest RM252,990 figure sees this hot hatch experiencing a RM6,978 increment. Included in said figure is VPCM’s usual 5-year unlimited mileage warranty coverage, 5-year free service package, and 5-year roadside assistance.
Apart from this minor upgrade for the GTI variant, no word yet on when the racier and also localised (CKD) Golf R with R Performance Package variant previewed in Aug last year will officially release. Initially, a final quarter (Q4) 2023 launch was noted, plus a RM330,000 estimated price figure.
Uncertain too is the fate of the baseline Golf R-Line variant which, as you may recall, was under consideration by VPCM for re-introduction, possibly with a revised price figure too. Said model retailed at RM170,560 sans insurance before it was quietly discontinued in March last year.
