Latest 2024MY iteration of the acclaimed Nissan GT-R R35 sportscar. Rumours suggest a final-run special will be made under its 2025MY guise.

Rumours have surfaced online indicating that the Nissan GT-R R35 sportscar is set to bow out soon, but it won’t go out quietly. That’s because rumours also indicate that the Japanese automaker will properly send-off its supercar-slaying sportscar with a final-run special edition.

First introduced in 2007, the Nissan GT-R R35 succeeded the Skyline GT-R R34 model, marking the first time that the GT-R performance badged moved away from a Skyline base. The R35 model was instead built upon a new and purpose-built platform that also housed an all-new powertrain.

Current 2024MY version sees both a standard (left) and uprated Nismo (right) versions available, albeit in select markets outside Japan.

Reports online indicate the upcoming 2025MY update will be a special limited to just 1,500 units, with 300 of which destined to be Nismo models too.

Citing Japanese publication Mag X, reports online indicate Nissan will unveil a new 2025 model year version of the GT-R sometime this week. The same reports suggest this final form of the R35-gen  GT-R will see production limited to just 1,500 units, with 300 of which destined to be Nismo models too.

What’s unclear still though is if any of these 1,500 units will be limited to just the Japanese market or not. Considering that the current 2024MY version of the GT-R was unveiled about a year ago, we can expect minimal upgrades or aesthetic changes for this rumoured 2025MY final-run special.

First shown in 2007, the GT-R R35 formed part of the Nissan Revival Plan and stood as a world-beating halo sportscar for the Nissan brand.

Instead, we can perhaps expect slight revisions to its aerodynamics to correlate with specific trim levels. Should its rumoured status as a final-run special be true, then we can also perhaps expect a slew of commemorative touches primed inside and out too.

Moreover, it seems unlikely that Nissan will invest significant resources to develop a thoroughly updated model only to axe it after just 1,500 units produced. This also likely suggest we won’t see massive changes to the GT-R’s existing powertrain package.

The GT-R Nismo pictured stands as the most powerful and focused version of the GT-R R35 yet as it boasts up to 600 HP and 651 NM outputs that enable 0-100 KM/H dashes done in just 3.4 seconds.

As a refresher, the R35-based GT-R employs a 3.8-litre V6 twin-turbo mill paired with both a trick dual-clutch transmission (DCT) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup. Output figures have risen steadily over the years with each update, the latest boasting up to 600 HP and 651 NM (GT-R Nismo).

When it first debuted, the GT-R R35 led the Nissan Revival Plan enacted by then COO – and later CEO – Carlos Ghosn before his unceremonious ousting. The model made headlines as a world-beater by delivering supercar-like performance sans the typical premium price tag of one.

Locally, the Nissan GT-R R35 wasn't officially offered, becoming a hot favourite in the recon (gray/parallel import) market instead.

Despite the fanfare and lore surrounding it, Nissan has yet to fully confirm a direct successor to for the GT-R R35 just yet. Plenty of rumours have surfaced over the year of Nissan possibly adding an electrified element into the next GT-R, but this remains hearsay only at this point.
