Previewed alongside the Ora 07 today is the GWM Tank 300, an off-roading SUV set to debut in Q3 2024.

Aside from the stylish Ora 07 EV, GWM Malaysia’s special media preview event today also features yet another upcoming model from the Chinese marque, this time being the GWM Tank 300. This rugged, off-roading SUV is set to become the first model under GWM’s Tank sub-brand to enter our market officially later in Q3 this year.

The full ICE version of the Tank 300 is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cyl turbocharged engine, which is then mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Available in both full ICE and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) forms, the Tank 300 model displayed today appears to be the former version, featuring a 2.0-litre 4-cyl turbocharged petrol mill under its hood. Although not as powerful as the Hi4-T PHEV model, this engine is capable of delivering 224 HP and 397 NM, which translates to a 0-100 KM/H sprint time of 10 seconds.

Said turbocharged power plant is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox that helps to send drive to all its four wheels (AWD). Aside from the standard 4x4 traction control selector (2H, 4H, and 4L), the Tank 300 also comes with no less than five terrain driving modes, which include sand, mud, snow, road, and many more.

The Tank 300's rugged design featuring generous ground clearance and prominent underbody cladding promises it to boast decent off-roading performance.

In terms of design, the GWM Tank 300 boasts a very rugged and chiselled design, featuring generous ground clearance that grants it decent approach, breakdown, and departure angles. Similar to the Ora 07, the Tank 300 posits a perfect blend of retro and modern design, featuring design cues derived from past 4x4 SUV models.

Key design elements present here include its rounded LED headlights flanking its horizontal front grille, prominent plastic underbody cladding with flared-out wheel arches for better off-roading manoeuvrability, boxy tailgate design with rectangular LED taillights and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, as well as rugged 18-inch wheels shod in Michelin Primacy SUV tyres.

The Tank 300's innards are filled with posh equipment and modern amenities.

Don’t let its rugged facade fool you, as the Tank 300 comes with a pretty posh cabin design, featuring tons of modern amenities and equipment. Similar to what we saw in the Australian market, the Malaysian-spec Tank 300 also comes with Nappa leather upholstery for the seats and cabin trims, dual 12.3-inch digital displays with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, multiple USB charging ports, dedicated A/C vents for the rear passengers, and a panoramic sunroof.

As we mentioned earlier, the GWM Tank 300 is slated to make its official debut later in Q3 this year, where it will be the first model under GWM’s Tank sub-brand to enter our local market. Although GWM Malaysia has yet to give indications regarding its price, the Tank 300 is poised to go against its upcoming Jaecoo J7, which is touted to be tagged at around RM160,000.

So folks, what do you think of the upcoming GWM Tank 300? Would you prefer this rugged 4x4 SUV over its sleeker, posher, and yet equally capable rival, the Jaecoo J7? As always, don’t forget to leave your thoughts in the comments down below…
