Chery Malaysia has commenced exporting a number of the Chery Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro models for Malaysia. This initial batch of cars, all produced by Chery at its plant in Wuhu, China, will serve as showroom display units once they make landfall sometime next month (June).
Chery didn’t state just how many units of each model are being shipped as fully imported units (CBU) for this purpose. However, from the images issued by the firm, it appears at least 3 units of the Omoda 5, and a further 3 units of the larger Tiggo 8 Pro, have been prepared for this task.
As announced during the Malaysia Autoshow 2023 earlier this month, Chery is set to locally assemble (CKD) both models with partners Inokom at the latter’s facility in Kulim, Kedah. Additionally, both the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro were shown publicly for the first time during the Malaysia Autoshow 2023.
Besides CKD operations, Chery Malaysia is also poised towards establishing research and development (R&D) centres here in Malaysia for regional testing efforts. The firm is also looking towards setting up Malaysia-based training and parts distribution centres to complement which.
As for their rebooted Malaysian sales network, Chery Malaysia previously stated that it plans to establish a network of 70 dealerships spread across the nation. Ahead of which, both the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro models will see an official launch sometime next month (June) as well.
As a refresher, the Omoda 5 is set to enter the hotly contested compact crossover SUV segment where it will be pitted against the likes of the Proton X50 and Honda HR-V. It comes powered by a 1.5-litre turbo 4-cyl mill paired with a CVT automatic box, and will feature a bevy of high-tech and premium amenities.
Key highlights of the latter include wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, full LED lighting, interactive dual digital displays, touch-sensitive climate control with rear vents, as well as a thumping 8-speaker Sony audio suite.
The Tiggo 8 Pro model stands as a larger crossover SUV offering that features 3 rows of seats. The model shown earlier this month at the Malaysia Autoshow 2023 was a recently facelifted version that sports Chery’s new “galaxy” grille design plus full-with LED rear lightbar and larger 19-inch wheels.
Set to rival against the new Proton X90, Peugeot 5008, and Kia Sorento, it packs a 2.0-litre 4-cyl turbo heart and a 7-speed DCT box paired with it. Key features on board include an interactive dual digital display module, dual-zone climate control with rear vents, powered tailgate, panoramic sunroof, and more.
We’ll have more updates and details as soon as both models officially launches in the market next month.
