In terms of styling, the new combustion-powered G60-gen BMW 5 Series will mirror its electrified i5 twin pictured.

Launched alongside its first all-electric i5 twin, the new eighth generation (G60) BMW 5 Series now stands as the last in its lineage to feature combustion powertrains fuelled by either petrol or diesel. Indeed, this should keep the rivalling new W214-gen Mercedes-Benz E-Class on its toes somewhat.

Like said rivalling E-Class, the combustion-powered new G60 generation 5 Series will harness some level of electrification in the form of both a mild- (MHEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) setups. Additionally, all will combustion-powered eighth-gen 5 Series will share the same 8-speed automatic transmission too.

All petrol-powered G60 5 Series will see some form of electrification - either MHEV or PHEV.

The range will firstly feature a base 520i model, which will reportedly harness a familiar 2.0-litre 4-cyl turbocharged petrol mill paired with a 48-volt MHEV system. This serves up 205 HP and 320 NM to the rear wheels, allowing for 0-100 KM/H sprints in 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 230 KM/H.

Above this comes a peppier 530i version developed primarily for the North American market. It also utilises the same 4-cyl as the 520i, albeit with a higher of 255 HP and 400 NM. For this variant, xDrive all-wheel-drive (AWD) will be offered as a cost-option as well.

Also developed for North America is 540i variant. This particular variant gets a rather special turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line 6-cyl heart that promises peppy figures of 350 HP and 520 NM, though the latter can be temporarily boosted to 540 NM via its built-in 48-volt MHEV system.

Pictured here is the new 530e PHEV variant.

Both the 530e and 550e PHEVs benefit with a larger new 19.4 kWh lithium-ion battery plus upgraded on board AC charging of up to 7.4 kW.

Included in the line up too are the 530e and 550e PHEVs, the former rated at 299 HP whilst the latter gets a 489 HP and xDrive AWD added too. Both benefit with new a new transmission-mounted electric motor that serves up 194 HP and 450 NM.

Said PHEVs also get a larger new 19.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack which, according to BMW, should see the 530e offer between 79 KM and 90 KM of electric-only range. The 550e, on the other hand, boasts higher electric-only range of between 87 KM and 100 KM instead.

Additionally, BMW has also increased the AC charging capacity of its PHEV 5 Series models. Both now accepts higher inputs of up to 7.4 kW for faster recharging, in fact.

In terms of on board kit and specifications, the combustion-powered G60 5 Series will also mirror what's fielded in its all-electric i5 twin.

Over on the diesel front, the new 5 Series sees just 520d offered up in both rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and xDrive AWD forms for now. This variant will field an oil-burning 2.0-litre turbo 4-cyl lump rated at 197 HP. BMW adds that a larger 6-cyl diesel mill is in the works, and this is set to enter the market next year.

Powertrains aside, expect the combustion-powered G60 5 Series models to mirror its electrified i5 twin in terms of kit and specifications. You can read up about which in our initial launch report of the i5 by clicking these blue words…
