Proton recorded its fourth consecutive month of year-on-year growth prior to the official launch of its new D-segment SUV, the X90. Despite a shortened sales and production month due to the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holiday period, Proton sold 9,415 vehicles (domestic and export), a 6.5% increase over April 2022.

This brings total sales for the first four months of 2023 to 49,702 vehicles, a 39.8% increase over the same period the previous year.

The national carmaker is the only Top-5 ranked brand to see sales growth in April, with an estimated market share of 20.4% and a second-place finish in the national automotive sales chart.

Overall, the industry fell by more than 41.4% in April compared to the record high achieved in March; the Total Industry Volume (TIV) for the month is estimated at 46,203 vehicles. This decrease can be attributed not only to the holiday period but also to the ending of the PENJANA tax-free incentive scheme.

Despite the decline in TIV, three of its models remain segment leaders through 2023. With 2,644 units delivered in April, the Proton X50 remains the best-selling B-segment SUV in Malaysia, as well as the overall top-selling SUV. The Proton Persona is another segment leader, with 1,263 deliveries, securing its lead in the B-segment sedan market for the fourth month in a row.

Furthermore, the Proton Exora had its best month of sales of the year, with 465 units sold, and maintained its sales leadership in the C-segment MPV category, with 1,559 units sold to date.

Other Proton models fared well too. With 3,949 units delivered, the Proton Saga ranks second in A-segment sedan sales for 2023, while the Proton X70 and 338 Proton Iriz rank third and fourth in their respective segments.

Roslan Abdullah, Proton’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, expressed gratitude to customers for contributing to the brand's sales growth despite the anticipated lower sales numbers due to the holiday season and the expiration of the tax-free period. He also stated that the new Proton X90 is expected to increase sales for the company.

The X90 mild hybrid is the company's first New Energy Vehicle (NEV), and it will lay the groundwork for future model offerings while also providing valuable experience to Proton's network of outlets in selling and servicing these vehicles.

The national carmaker had its best month of the year in terms of exports in April, shipping 187 units to foreign markets. The most popular export model is still the Proton Saga, followed by the Proton X50 and Proton X70.

Proton’s export sales for the first four months of the year totaled 603 vehicles. Despite the impact of external global economic factors on export volumes, Proton remains optimistic about its overseas sales prospects for the year and is actively working with partners to raise the brand's profile and promote its products.
