Minister of investment, trade and industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, share on his official Facebook page about his visit to Kyoto for a tour of Daihatsu's production plant, which was designed with the ESG (environmental, social, and governance) agenda in mind.
During the fruitful visit, he discussed Daihatsu's long-term investment strategy in Malaysia, particularly for electric vehicles (EVs) and energy efficient vehicles (EEVs).
Daihatsu's been known to have a close relationship with Perodua in Indonesia, and the latter has already expressed its vision of an EV with the Electric Motion Online (EMO) concept, which debuted last month.
The automaker, on the other hand, has previously stated that hybrids will be the first to hit the market, with a new Perodua CKD Hybrid xEV project set to launch this year. Perodua plans to launch its first HEV in 2024 and its first BEV in 2029.
Perodua has not stated what type of EV is being planned for Malaysia at this time, but if an EV prototype shown to the MITI minister is any indication, a fully electric Axia is a possibility. The prototype is based on the second-generation Daihatsu Mira e:S, according to photos posted on the minister's Facebook page.
