Elon Musk said on Wednesday that Tesla will likely launch full self-driving technology this year, generating significant profits that will offset some of the margin pressure caused by aggressive price cuts. "I hesitate to say it, but I think we'll do it this year," Tesla CEO Elon Musk said during a conference call. Musk has previously missed his self-driving capability targets dating back years.

The test version of what Tesla calls Full Self-Driving (FSD) software will be "two steps forward, one step back between releases," Musk said, "but the trend is very clearly towards full self driving, towards full autonomy." Following crashes, the technology as it stands now has drawn legal and regulatory scrutiny. Tesla has stated that the technology does not make the car self-driving and that it requires driver supervision.

Tesla's financial chief, Zachary Kirkhorn, stated that the company's automotive margin was hurt not only by price cuts, but also by increased deferred revenue for FSD software, and that "this deferral should get recognised once some of the software catches up."
