Launched recently in Malaysia, the new Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 4MATIC+ is the brand’s latest addition to its EQ electric vehicle (EV) line-up.
An all-electric type of the E-Class, it underpins Mercedes’ Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA2) platform, and is also built with 100% recycled steel.
The business saloon is dressed in the AMG Line Package (sporty bumper – front, rear), and the AMG Night Package (trims – black/black chrome).
Fully-imported (CBU), the sole variant (EQE 53 4MATIC+) hailing from Germany is priced from MYR 649,888 (on-the-road, without insurance).
Each purchase comes with a four-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, and a 10-year/250,000 KM EV battery warranty.
Weighing in at 2,540 KG, the new EQE 53 4MATIC+ stands at 4,946 MM long, 1,961 MM wide, 1,510 MM tall, and with a wheelbase spanning 3,120 MM.
A seamless design with an overall rounded appeal, the one-bow lines and cab-forward silhouette is typical of the EQ styling cues.
The AMG-exclusive black panel grille with hot-stamped vertical struts in chrome, integrated Mercedes star and ‘AMG’ lettering, characterises the front-end.
Contrasting this is the front apron in the typical AMG A-wing design, which is painted in high-gloss black and features chrome trim.
Matching that with the same finish is the front splitter in high-gloss black with chrome trim, and flics and fins on the optical air intakes.
Complementing the front, its rear-end further provides the dynamically sporty accent with its smoothly rounded contours and refined trimmings.
Featured is a body-coloured rear apron with an aerodynamically optimised diffuser, and a body-coloured AMG spoiler lip neatly mounted on the tailgate.
Overall, the rear layout exudes a jointless design, with a bumper that extends to the sides giving the body a muscular shoulder section.
Installed are Digital Light headlamps with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL).
They are full LED units housed in an angularly-rounded frame, projecting an overall focused outlook.
The tail lamps are also full LED units featuring a lightbar design, stretching across the tailgate. Very futuristic-looking, the housing is slim and wraps all the way to the sides.
Power-adjusted and -folded, the side mirrors come with turn- and blind spot-indicators, as well as an automatic dimming function.
It gets a setup of the AMG high-performance brakes, featuring red-coloured brake callipers (front - six-piston, 415 MM discs / rear - single-piston, 378 MM discs).
Optional, AMG ceramic high-performance compound brake system with larger disc brakes (front - 440 MM).
Fitted, a set of 21-Inch AMG multi-spoke, matte black high-sheen-finished light-alloy rims, wrapped in Bridgestone Turanza T005, 265/35 R21 (front) and 295/30 R21 (rear) tyres.
The new EQE 53 4MATIC+ has a futuristic cockpit outlook, blessed with the AMG Line interior treatment, which sees carbon fibre details among other fitments.
It is draped in a combination of MICROCUT microfibre and ARTICO man-made leather, themed in either black or space grey, matching the rest of the cabin.
Main highlight is the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) Hyperscreen, conquering the entire layout extending from A-pillar to A-pillar.
All covered by a single pane of scratch-resistant glass, it comprises three units (driver, central, passenger).
Other features on the dash are metallised-finish, slim vent band and protruding-turbine-designed air-conditioning nozzles.
One third of the MBUX Hyperscreen, installed for the driver, is a 12.3-Inch digital multi-function setup with a Heads-Up Display (HUD).
Courtesy of the AMG Line interior, it features AMG seats with a combination of MICROCUT microfibre and ARTICO man-made leather, in either black or space grey.
Alternatively, seat upholstery in all-black Nappa leather is also available with AMG-specific seat graphics.
Other details are AMG badges on the backrests of the front seats, and embossed AMG emblems in the front head restraints.
Power adjustable, the front seats get heated and memory functions, and a four-way lumbar support. Rear seats get a 40:20:40 split-folding configuration.
For an average-sized sedan, it is adequately comfortable with generous head, leg and shoulder rooms. As such, front and rear occupants have no issues with space.
Standard fitment is the AMG Performance steering wheel, in a three-rounded twin-spoke with a flat-bottom design, wrapped in Nappa leather and MICROCUT microfibre.
It features rounded AMG controls (multi-function buttons), aluminium paddle shifters, column adjustments (tilt, telescopic), and an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system (Rack and Pinion).
Several practical spaces available, like a centre console storage box and compartmentalised spaces, medium sized glove box, and seat back and side door pockets.
There are four cup holders, two located in the front centre console and two in the rear armrest, and there are four bottle holders, located at each side door pocket.
Equipped with the USB Package Plus, it features six USB-C ports placed around the cabin, including two in the open storage compartment underneath the centre console. It also has a Qi wireless charger.
Coming with the Easy-Pack tailgate feature (hands-free), the boot provides a contactless tailgate function that opens up to 430-Litres of loading space. The rear seats can be folded down using buttons on the boot lid for more space.
The new EQE 53 4MATIC+ features the following set of Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS).
Under Driving Assistance Plus Package, grouped are Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Steering Assist, Extended Automatic Re-start in Traffic Jams, Evasive Manoeuvre Support, PRE-SAFE Impulse Side, Rear Sensors for Lane Departure Assistant, and URBAN GUARD Vehicle Protection. Under Parking Package, included are 360-degree camera, Active Parking Assist, Pre-Installed Remote Parking Assist, and Memory Parking Assist.
Others include blind spot monitoring, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with stop and go, and Lane Centring Assist with Level two semi-autonomous driving.
Passive safety includes impact beams (side, front), nine airbags (driver, driver's knee, passenger, front side, front/rear curtain, rear side), airbag disable function, ISOFIX, seat belts (reminder, pre-tensioner, anchor), door ajar warning, auto-dimming interior and exterior rear-view mirrors, Adaptive High Beam Assist Plus, parking sensors (6-front, 6-rear), PRE-SAFE system, TIREFIT, engine immobiliser, anti-theft alarm system, and interior monitoring system.
Drive modes available via DYNAMIC SELECT are Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Individual. Whereas, via Recuperative Braking are D+, D, D-, Gliding (Shift Pedals), DAuto, and Eco Assist (One-Pedal-Driving).
Completing the MBUX Hyperscreen setup, the infotainment sees a 17.7-Inch OLED centre touchscreen and another 12.3-Inch OLED passenger touchscreen.
It incorporates a fingerprint sensor for individual driving preferences, MBUX Navigation Premium, MBUX augmented reality for navigation, extended MBUX functions, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (wireless).
The Driving Assistance Plus package and the Parking Package will make driving less fatigue and much safer.
Plus, with the other supporting systems, long-distance travels will be less of a burden for the driver as well as ensuring the safety of the occupants on board.
Installed is a 15-speaker, 710-W Burmester 3D sound system. It supports the AMG Sound Experience feature, accessible via the infotainment system.
Using special speakers, a bass actuator and sound generator, the produced sounds are tuned to the driving status and the selected drive program, both inside and out.
The feature is available in a number of programs. ‘Authentic’, ‘Balanced’, ‘Sport’, ‘Powerful’, and the optional ‘Performance’.
The new EQE 53 4MATIC+ harbours two electric motors (axle-mounted - front, rear), generating a total output of 658 HP and 950 Nm of torque.
With the optional AMG Dynamic Plus Package torque increases to 1,000 NM, while the Race Start feature boosts it up to 1,020 NM.
It has a single-speed automatic transmission.
Power is sent to all four wheels via the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system.
It accelerates from 0 to 100 KM/H in 3.5 seconds (3.3 seconds - AMG Dynamic Plus Package), and has a 220 KM/H top speed (240 KM/H - Race Start).
Juicing up the e-motors is a 90.6-KWH high-performance Lithium-Ion battery, providing a range of up to 527 KM.
Charging via AC at 11-KW from a 10% to 100% state of charge (SoC) takes eight hours and 15 minutes, while DC charging at 170-KW from 10% to 80% SoC takes 32 minutes.
Charging equipment consists of a five-metre charging cable (home-use wallbox, public charging station). Optionally available is a 22-KW AC charger.
Standard kit on the new EQE 53 4MATIC+ includes keyless go (engine Start/Stop button), THERMOTRONIC dual-zone automatic climate control (individually controlled rear air vents), power-adjustable front AMG seats (heat/memory functions, four-way lumbar support), multifunction steering wheel, auto-dimming mirrors (interior, exterior), rain sensing wipers, 64-colour active ambient lighting, MBUX Hperscreen, pull-out sun visor, panoramic sunroof (touch-slider operated), Illuminated door sill panels with ‘Mercedes-Benz’ lettering, a hands-free powered tailgate, independent boot locking, trunk light, and automatic headlamps.
Ride comfortability feels flexible and firm at the same time, delivering high-power density and reliability.
Featured is a setup of AMG Ride Control+ air suspension with an adaptive damping system, AMG-specific carriers, suspension links, and anti-roll bars.
The suspension setup is based on a four-link front axle and a multilink rear configuration. Overall, the drive has been tuned to provide complete stability and grip to the driver.
It is well equipped to offer high levels of NVH comfort (Noise, Vibration, Harshness). Its electric drivetrain (eATS) features magnets that are arranged inside the rotors in an NVH-optimised way (known as sheet metal cut). Plus, it also has a special foam mat all-around as an NVH cover.
The new Mercedes-Benz EQE 53 4MATIC+ exudes an all-around sporty and energy filled outlook. Its smooth and seamless body contours kitted with the AMG Line specification is simply electrifying.
