Summary

First of its kind representing a new generation of Peugeots, Stellantis Malaysia’s first official release, the 2024 Peugeot 408.

Once a sedan, the French Lion’s C-segment contender is now a fastback crossover, built on Stellantis’ Efficient Modular Platform 2 (EMP2).

Locally-assembled (CKD - Gurun, Kedah), offered are three variants (Allure - MYR 146,055, Premium - MYR 166,055, GT - MYR 196,055).

Prices (OTR, w/o insurance) inclusive of a seven-year/200,000 KM mileage warranty (standard - three years, extended - four years).

Four exterior colours. Perla Nera Black (Allure, Premium, GT), Okinite White (Allure, Premium, GT), Artense Grey (Allure, Premium), Obsession Blue (Premium, GT).

Exterior

Body Dimensions

The new 408 stands at 4,687 MM long, 1,859 MM wide, 1,478 MM (Allure, Premium) and 1,487 MM (GT) tall, and with a wheelbase spanning 2,787 MM.

Front View

Angularly-chiselled and -athletic with a robust feline figure, it symbolises Peugeot’s ‘The Language Of Attraction’ design.

Aerodynamic, the front-end sees sharply-lined hood and fenders, framing a vertically-slatted grille (Chrome - Allure, Premium/Body-colour - GT).

Centre-staged is the new ‘Lion Head’ emblem, and featured on the lower bumper is a meshed centre air-vent and angular corner fitments.

Accentuating the whole layout are minimalist body trimmings (Black - bumper, fenders, side sills, side windows).

Rear View

A dynamic fastback silhouette, the feline stature is furthered with a slanting roofline that flows out mimicking ‘Cat Ears’.

Sportily-angular, the rear-end sees high-rising muscular fenders with lines linking the side profile to the boot-lid spoiler.

Underlining the latter is the new ‘Lion Head’ emblem, and featured on the inverse cut-out bumper is a large protruding diffuser.

Accentuating the whole layout are minimalist body trimmings (Black - centre tailgate, bumper, fenders, side sills, side windows).

Headlamps

Inward-tilted and fiercely-framed, the grille merging headlamps are angularly-slim, projecting a feline-esque design.

Fitted are full LED (Allure, Premium) and Matrix LED (GT) units, with ‘Lion Fangs’ LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL), striking down the edges of the bumper.

Features are automatic On/Off, automatic high beam (GT), High Beam Assist (HBA), welcome lights, and sequential turn signals. 

Tail Lamps

The tail lamps are housed in a slim wrapped-around and inward-narrow design, merging with the centre tailgate trim.

Installed are full LED (Allure, Premium) and 3D ‘Lion Claw Effect’ LED (GT - light graphics) units. Features are welcome lights and sequential turn signals.

Side Mirror

The side mirrors (black-capped) are electronic-powered (adjust, auto-fold), featuring Blind Spot Detection (BSD) indicators (Premium, GT), sequential turn signals, and automatic-dimming.

Brakes

Fitted are ventilated (front) and solid (rear) disc brakes, accompanied by an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold system.

Wheels

Mounted is a set of 18-Inch Granite Grey (Allure) and Granite Black (Premium) alloy rims, wrapped in 225/55 R18 (front, rear) Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance SUV tyres.

Variant GT upgrades to a set of 20-Inch Monolithe Black alloy rims, rubbered-up in 245/40 R20 (front, rear) Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 tyres.

Interior

Dashboard

The new 408 has a highly-sculpted and an angularly-tiered dashboard. A sharply-lined layout with premium quality materials.

A soft- and hard-panelled Black theme, centre-staged is the Peugeot i-Cockpit setup (3D - instrument cluster, infotainment).

Filling-in the layout are horizontally-slatted Silver trims, featured on the air-conditioning vents, striking three-quarters of the top section.

Overall, the cockpit is well designed with all the buttons being driver-centric, user-friendly and stealthily-embedded in the panels.

Instrument Cluster

Part of the Peugeot i-Cockpit setup (3D), installed is a 10-Inch digital instrument cluster (3D Quartz - GT).

Seats

All-black, high-quality and comfortable. The interior is upholstered in Comfort Vinyl (Allure), Comfort Leather (Premium) and Nappa Leather (GT).

Variant Allure gets electric-powered (driver - multi-way) and manual-adjusted (passenger) seats. The rear sees a bench seat (60:40 split-fold) with a centre armrest (fold-out).

Variant Premium gets electric-powered (driver, passenger - multi-way) seats. The rear sees a bench seat (60:40 split-fold) with a centre armrest (fold-out).

Variant GT upgrades to AGR-certified (driver) electric-powered (driver, passenger - multi-way, memory, massage, heating) seats. The rear sees a bench seat (60:40 split-fold) with a centre armrest (fold-out).

Completing the environment are glass sunroof (GT - outer roof spoiler, sunshade, electric tilt/slide) and rubber floor mats (front, rear - Allure, Premium, GT).

Space

The five-seater compact SUV (crossover) offers plenty of interior mobility, meaning front and rear occupants get ample space.

Sufficient head-, shoulder-, and leg-room, the cabin space is generous due to the wide and borderline long design of the body.

Steering Functions

Part of the Peugeot i-Cockpit setup, mounted is an ergonomically compact two-spoke flat-top-bottom steering wheel, wrapped in Black leather.

Features are multi-switches (Bluetooth, Media, Vehicle Telematics), column adjustments (tilt, telescopic), and paddle shifters.

Drive is aided by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system.

Storage Space

Numerous storage compartments. E.g., side door/seat back pockets, centre console partitioned/caverned spaces (armrest storage), glove box, and a boot floor storage (hidden underneath).

Cup Holders

Provided are four cup holders (two-front, two-rear), and four bottle holders (two-front, two-rear - side doors).

Charging Ports

Multiple power outlets available. E.g., four USB ports (two-front, two-rear), one 12 V socket (front), and one wireless charger (front).

Boot Space

Accessing its powered-tailgate (contactless - remote/key fob - GT) opens up to 536-Litres (seats up), and 1,611-Litres/1,583-Litres (seats down - Allure, Premium/GT) of load capacities.

Active Safety

The new 408 features the following suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Grouped are Traffic Signs Recognition (TSR - Allure), Advanced Traffic Signs Recognition (ATSR - Premium, GT), Active Hood (Pedestrian Protection), Passive Cruise Control (Allure), Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control (AACC - Premium, GT), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB - Allure), Advanced Autonomous Emergency Braking (AAEB - Premium, GT), Front Collision Warning (FCW - Premium, GT), Blind Spot Detection (BSD - Premium, GT), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA - Premium, GT), and High Beam Assist (HBA).

Other systems include Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electric Brake-Force Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with Hill Assist, Traction Control System (TCS), and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Passive Safety

Passive safety includes six airbags (driver-passenger, front side, front-rear curtain), seatbelts (anchors, reminders, pretensioners), ISOFIX (anchors, top tethers), auto-dimming rear-view mirrors (exterior, interior), parking cameras (reverse - Allure, Premium, 360-degree - GT), parking sensors (four-rear - Allure, four-front/rear - Premium, GT), door ajar warning, side/front impact beams, and security alarm (immobiliser, anti-theft).

Infotainment

Completing the Peugeot i-Cockpit setup (3D), installed is a 10-Inch HD colour touchscreen. Variant GT adds on configurable i-Toggles.

The system supports Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, Intelligent Voice Assistant, Navigation, USB and Bluetooth.

Sound System

Entertainment is piped through a standard six-speaker setup (Allure, Premium), and a 10-speaker Focal Premium Hi-Fi sound system (GT).

Performance

Engine

The new 408 harbours Peugeot’s PureTech 1.6-Litre, inline four-cylinder 16-valve, direct injection turbocharged, DOHC petrol engine, producing 218 HP at 5,500 RPM and 300 NM of torque at 2,000 RPM.

Transmission

Mated to the mill is an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Drivetrain

Power is transmitted to the front wheels. Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) system.

Acceleration

0 to 100 KM/H is done in 8.8 seconds. Top speed is approximately 200 KM/H.

Fuel Consumption

Fuel tank capacity is 60-Litres, and the fuel consumption reads at 7.56 L/100 KM (NEDC).

Underpinned is Stellantis’ Efficient Modular Platform 2 (EMP2), propped up by a MacPherson strut (front) and multi-link (rear) suspension setup.

The ride quality is firm, agile and well-balanced, with a smooth engine power and transmission delivery. Comfortably spacious, safe and suitable for a daily driver.

Sound Insulation

Good sound insulation, covering all the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) aspects. The cabin experience is refined and peaceful.

Conclusion

The 2024 Peugeot 408 is a great crossover (compact SUV). First, it offers a strikingly edgy exterior appeal with its feline-esque design.

Second, its shell envelopes a modern cockpit, featuring a myriad of advanced connectivity, safety systems and creature comfort features.

Ultimately, its build quality is satisfactory inside and out, and the new 408 is surely a Peugeot for Malaysians to consider.
