More news from Auto China 2024, Italian supercars marque Lamborghini have unwrapped a newly electrified version of its top-selling Urus super-SUV. Called the Urus SE, said MLB Evo-based offering now sees its manic V8 heart augmented with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system.
Unlike the usual trend of downsizing, Lamborghini elected to retain the regular Urus’ 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. It’s now paired with an e-motor integrated into the 8-speed automatic transmission, as well as a 25.9 kWh battery pack.
Combined, said V8 and PHEV system outputs nearly 800 HP now – 789 HP, to be exact – and an equally manic 950 NM of peak torque to drive all four of its wheels. In turn, this enables the Urus SE to despatch 0-100 KM/H sprints in just 3.4 secs – 0.1 sec quicker than the Urus S.
Additionally, with each full charge, the 25.9 kWh battery mentioned earlier can also deliver nearly 60 KM (37 miles) of pure-electric driving range. In EV drive mode, the Urus SE can also hit speeds as high as 130 KM/H, claims the Sant’Agata-rooted supercars marque.
To accommodate its new electrified elements, the Urus SE also adopts a new electro-hydro multi-plate clutch in its 8-speed automatic box. It also gains a brand new virtual rear LSD that replaces the mechanical LSD unit primed in the regular Urus.
Whilst the former now distributes driving torque variable between the front and rear axles, the latter driveline component promises to deliver “on-demand oversteer”.
And despite tipping the scales over 300 KG more than the non-hybrid Urus (2,540 KG vs 2,240 KG), Lamborghini’s CTO Rouven Mohr highlights that the Urus SE can lap a circuit as quickly as the less powerful (657 HP) but lighter and more driver-focused Urus Performante.
On to aesthetic changes, and the Urus SE is easily denoted by its new bonnet design that now extends down to a revised grille, flanked by new LED headlights. Altogether, the revised front end now exudes strong hints of the Revuelto – Lamborghini’s current V12 flagship supercar.
Other changes include a redesigned rear hatch, followed by new 23-inch ‘Galanthus’ wheels, the latter shod in sticky new Pirelli P Zero tyres.
On board, the Urus SE presents occupants – and driver – with a larger new 12.3-inch infotainment display, redesigned climate control air vents, as well as seats and dash covered in new materials. The physical controls have also been revised with a more tactile and mechanical feel.
Standing as Lamborghini’s second ever PHEV production model, the Urus SE debut comes slightly over year following the Revuelto’s premier. Lamborghini is expected to debut another PHEV offering later this year, which will stand as the successor of the Huracan.
