Besides the upcoming sporty electric sedan teased last month, it appears that Mercedes-AMG is also developing a new flagship performance EV SUV.

This new AMG EV SUV will be developed from the ground up, and won't be based on current Merc EV models like the EQS SUV.

As revealed by Autocar UK, it appears that the new AMG EV SUV will underpin the same dedicated AMG.EA platform used on the electric sedan teased prior. More importantly, this new EV SUV will be a new standalone model developed wholly by the Affalterbach-based team instead of being based on any current Mercedes-Benz EV models.

Featuring an 800-volt battery architecture, the new AMG.EA platform will provide the new AMG EV SUV with a compact, high-performance battery pack that will juice its axial flux electric motors, exclusively developed by Yasa for AMG. With each of the motors capable of producing up to 480 HP and 800 NM, the new AMG EV SUV will reportedly have a total system output north of the 1,000-HP mark, possibly sporting the same dual-motor setup as its sedan twin.

Just like the new AMG EV sedan teased, the upcoming AMG EV SUV will also benefit from a host of AMG-specific mechanical bits for better handling and performance.

Aside from the quad-digit power output, the upcoming AMG EV SUV will also have a host of mechanical and tech bits to help with its performance, including a four-wheel steering system, some torque-vectoring capabilities, as well as the AMG Active Ride Control suspension system.

Sources have also told Autocar UK that the new AMG EV SUV will be previewed in an upcoming concept model, set to be revealed any time this year. This upcoming SUV concept is said to boast a similar length to the Vision AMG concept, measuring 5,100 MM long with a wheelbase spanning over 3,000 MM – promising generous cabin space.

Additionally, this new AMG EV SUV will be a direct replacement for the marque’s current midsize performance SUV model, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63.

Production of this upcoming Mercedes-AMG EV SUV is set to take place at the marque’s Sindelfingen plant in Germany, where it will be assembled alongside the previously-teased AMG sporty sedan. Autocar UK’s sources have also indicated that preparations are already being made to accommodate two new electric AMG models, which will serve as the new flagship models for AMG’s new performance EV lineup.
