RM115,000. 223 PS. 476 Nm. And more than 1,100 km of claimed driving range.
Those are the headline numbers GWM Malaysia is putting behind the all-new ORA 5 HEV, with bookings now officially open ahead of its Malaysian launch in November.
But of all those numbers, RM115,000 might be the most interesting.
That's only the estimated selling price for now, with GWM holding back the final price and complete Malaysian specifications until launch. Still, if it lands anywhere close to RM115k, the ORA 5 HEV will find itself surrounded by some very familiar SUVs.
And that's where things get interesting.
Under the bonnet is a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor and GWM's Hi2 intelligent hybrid system.
According to GWM Malaysia, the system produces a combined 223 PS and 476 Nm, while claimed fuel consumption is as low as 4.4 L/100 km.
Then there's the number likely to grab plenty of attention: more than 1,100 km of total driving range.
There's an important word there: total.
This isn't an EV capable of travelling 1,100 km between charges. The ORA 5 HEV is a hybrid that doesn't require external charging, combining its petrol engine, electric motor, battery and fuel tank to achieve that claimed total range.
GWM itself notes that the 1,100 km figure is based on optimal conditions, with actual range varying depending on driving style, road and traffic conditions, vehicle load and other factors.
So don't read "1,100 km" as a promise that every owner will drive from Kuala Lumpur to Hat Yai and most of the way back before looking for a petrol station.
Still, 4.4 L/100 km and 1,100-plus km are attractive numbers on paper.
Especially for RM115k.
Perhaps the most obvious hybrid comparison is the Toyota Yaris Cross HEV.
Toyota Malaysia currently lists the Yaris Cross HEV from RM109,900, putting it roughly RM5,100 below the ORA 5 HEV's estimated price.
For buyers specifically shopping for an electrified compact SUV around RM110k, that's significant.
Toyota brings an established name, an existing Malaysian dealer and aftersales network, and its hybrid powertrain. The GWM counters with some rather eye-catching performance numbers.
On paper, the ORA's 223 PS and 476 Nm give it a particularly strong performance story for an efficiency-focused hybrid SUV at this price.
Here's another way to look at RM115,000. Honda Malaysia currently lists the entry-level HR-V 1.5L S at RM115,900, putting it just RM900 above GWM's estimated ORA 5 HEV price.
Now, this isn't a powertrain-for-powertrain comparison. The RM115,900 HR-V S uses a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine, while Honda's actual HR-V hybrid, the e:HEV RS, sits considerably higher at RM143,900.
But that's precisely why the comparison matters. A Malaysian walking into the market with roughly RM115k isn't necessarily deciding between two identical hybrid systems. They're deciding what RM115k buys them.
At that budget, GWM could be asking buyers to choose its turbo hybrid powertrain over one of Malaysia's most recognisable compact SUVs.
That's a more difficult battle than a specification sheet might suggest.
Then there's the Proton X50. Proton's published Peninsular Malaysia pricing puts the X50 Flagship at RM113,300, just RM1,700 below the ORA's estimated figure.
The X50 isn't a hybrid, so again, this isn't a direct powertrain comparison. It is, however, very much a wallet comparison.
Someone with around RM115k to spend can already walk into a Proton showroom and look at the range-topping X50. At the other end of that decision sits a new GWM hybrid promising considerably more torque, low claimed fuel consumption and more than 1,100 km of total range.
That gives the ORA 5 HEV an interesting proposition on paper. It also means GWM has to convince buyers that those specifications are worth choosing over a deeply established local nameplate.
Put the numbers together and the neighbourhood GWM is entering becomes much clearer:
| Model | Price | Powertrain | Why It's Relevant |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota Yaris Cross HEV | From RM109,900 | Hybrid | Closest obvious hybrid price comparison |
| Proton X50 Flagship | RM113,300 | 1.5L turbo petrol | Range-topping X50 at a similar budget |
| GWM ORA 5 HEV | Est. RM115,000 | 1.5L turbo hybrid | 223 PS, 476 Nm, 1,100+ km claimed total range |
| Honda HR-V S | RM115,900 | 1.5L petrol | Only RM900 above ORA's estimated price |
| Honda HR-V e:HEV RS | RM143,900 | Hybrid | Honda's hybrid HR-V alternative |
Sources: GWM Malaysia, Toyota Malaysia, Honda Malaysia and Proton. ORA 5 HEV price is estimated and not final. Prices shown are intended as a snapshot of Malaysian shopping alternatives around this budget and do not imply identical specifications or powertrains.
There's a reason we've included both hybrid and non-hybrid models here. This isn't meant to suggest they're technically identical competitors. They're not.
It's a snapshot of the choices a Malaysian SUV buyer will encounter when walking into the market with roughly RM110k to RM120k to spend.
Viewed that way, GWM appears to be placing the ORA 5 HEV right in the thick of it.
There's another piece of context worth remembering. GWM Malaysia previously reported that its sales grew 42.4% year-on-year in the first half of 2026, with the Haval H6 HEV remaining its highest-volume model.
That matters because the ORA 5 HEV isn't arriving as an isolated experiment from a completely unknown player.
GWM is steadily building a Malaysian electrified line-up spanning hybrids, plug-in hybrids and EVs, and the ORA 5 HEV could give it something particularly useful: an electrified SUV positioned around one of the more accessible six-figure price points.
There's also something slightly unusual about the badge.
Malaysians have so far known ORA primarily through the Good Cat EV. The ORA 5 takes that name into a different proposition: an SUV with a hybrid powertrain and no need to plug in.
That potentially puts the ORA badge in front of buyers who like the idea of electrification but aren't ready to organise their lives around charging.
And this is the part worth remembering before declaring a winner. GWM Malaysia has only announced an estimated selling price of RM115,000.
Bookings are now open at authorised GWM dealerships nationwide, but the company says the final selling price and complete Malaysian specifications will only be announced when the ORA 5 HEV officially launches in November 2026.
That means we still don't have the complete picture. The final equipment list could strengthen the value proposition considerably, while a different final price could change the comparisons above.
For now, though, RM115k tells us enough to understand what GWM is trying to do.
The ORA 5 HEV isn't being positioned in an empty corner of the market. It's walking straight into territory occupied by the Toyota Yaris Cross HEV, Proton X50 and Honda HR-V.
And if GWM can actually deliver 223 PS, 476 Nm and its promised hybrid efficiency at around RM115,000, it has given Malaysian SUV buyers another reason to make the comparison before signing anything.
