RM53,499 for a brand-new Perodua EV.
That's the eye-catching new starting point for the Perodua QV-E following an additional RM10,000 Malaysia Day rebate, and it suddenly puts Perodua's first EV remarkably close to Malaysia's other national-brand electric car, the Proton e.MAS 5.
But comparing the two purely on their headline prices wouldn't tell the whole story. The RM53,499 QV-E uses Perodua's Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) arrangement, meaning you don't own the battery and instead pay RM215 per month for nine years. The Proton e.MAS 5, meanwhile, includes its battery in the vehicle price.
And if you want to own the QV-E together with its battery? The latest promotional price is RM77,499.
So with the QV-E now significantly cheaper than before, how do the two stack up for someone actually looking to buy an affordable EV?
At first glance, the new pricing makes the comparison look almost too easy. The QV-E starts at RM53,499, while Proton e.MAS' August 2026 Peninsular Malaysia price list puts the e.MAS 5 Prime at RM56,800 and Premium at RM69,800.
That puts just RM3,301 between the QV-E's headline price and the e.MAS 5 Prime. But there's one rather large difference: the QV-E's RM53,499 price doesn't include ownership of its 52.5 kWh battery.
Under BaaS, customers pay another RM215 per month, including tax, for nine years.
One important caveat: the RM53,499 and RM77,499 QV-E figures are promotional prices following the additional RM10,000 Malaysia Day rebate and apply to limited units. Perodua has not announced this as a permanent price revision.
This is where the RM53,499 headline price needs a little more context.
The arithmetic itself is simple:
That puts the simple nominal expenditure at RM76,719 over nine years, before financing and other ownership costs. Interestingly, that's only RM780 less than the promotional RM77,499 price for buying the QV-E outright with its battery included.
But don't interpret that as BaaS simply being RM780 cheaper.
The two arrangements work differently. Under BaaS, the battery remains owned by Perodua throughout the nine-year leasing period. Buy the QV-E outright, however, and the battery belongs to you. Perodua has also said it will offer to buy the battery back when the time eventually comes for it to be disposed of. (Click this link for more info on this.)
Once we move beyond price, the two cars are actually quite different. The QV-E packs a 52.5 kWh LFP battery and a front-mounted electric motor producing 150 kW (204 PS) and 285 Nm. Perodua quotes up to 370 km of WLTP range, while 0-100 km/h takes 7.5 seconds.
The e.MAS 5 is offered in two variants. The Prime gets a 30.12 kWh LFP battery with 225 km WLTP range, while the Premium steps up to 40.16 kWh and 325 km WLTP.

On the spec sheet, the QV-E therefore gives you more battery capacity, more WLTP range and considerably more power than either e.MAS 5 variant. But that's not the whole buying decision.
Charging is another area where simply looking at the peak kW figure doesn't tell the whole story. For AC charging, all three options support up to 6.6 kW. The difference in charging time mainly comes down to battery size.
Perodua quotes around 8 hours from 0% to 100% for the QV-E's larger 52.5 kWh battery. Proton quotes 4.3 hours from 10% to 100% for the e.MAS 5 Prime and 5.9 hours for the Premium.
For DC fast charging, however, the three aren't identical. The QV-E peaks at 60 kW, while the e.MAS 5 Prime supports up to 53 kW and the Premium goes up to 71 kW.

So there's an important distinction here. The QV-E offers the largest battery and longest WLTP range, but that doesn't make it the fastest car to recharge.
For a quick DC top-up, Proton quotes a shorter 30-80% charging time for both e.MAS 5 variants. At home, meanwhile, all three are capped at the same 6.6 kW AC rate, with the smaller e.MAS 5 batteries naturally requiring less time to replenish.
Despite sitting in overlapping price territory, these aren't identical cars wearing different badges, and both bring quite a lot of equipment to the table.
The QV-E measures 4,170 mm long, 1,800 mm wide and 1,502 mm tall, with a 2,680 mm wheelbase. The e.MAS 5 measures 4,135 mm long, 1,805 mm wide and 1,580 mm tall, with a 2,650 mm wheelbase.
So the QV-E is slightly longer and lower, with a longer wheelbase, while the e.MAS 5 is slightly wider and noticeably taller.
Inside, the QV-E isn't short on tech either. It gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital rear-view mirror, wireless phone charger, ambient lighting, semi-leather upholstery and a six-way powered driver's seat.
There's also Perodua's P2 OneGo connected-services suite, which offers functions including remote vehicle controls, vehicle status, live location, driving history and geofencing.

The QV-E also brings some noteworthy safety technology. Alongside six airbags and its 360-degree surround-view monitor, its driver-assistance package includes features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Highway Assist and Traffic Jam Assist.
One particularly unusual feature is Child Presence Detection (CPD). Perodua says the system can detect movement and vital signs such as breathing in the second-row seating and footwell areas, including movement underneath fabric coverings, to warn the driver if a child or pet has been left inside.
The e.MAS 5 has plenty to counter with. Even the Prime gets a 14.6-inch FHD infotainment display, six airbags, leatherette upholstery, a 70-litre frunk, rear-wheel drive and rear multi-link suspension.
Step up to the Premium and Proton adds equipment including a 360-degree camera, ADAS, powered tailgate, LED headlights and 16-inch alloy wheels.
So this isn't a case of the QV-E bringing the stronger powertrain while the e.MAS 5 brings all the toys. Both are well-equipped, but their priorities are different. The QV-E packs some interesting connected, driver-assistance and cabin technology, while the e.MAS 5 counters with its larger central display, practical packaging and additional Premium equipment.
This might ultimately matter more than horsepower. Choose an e.MAS 5 and the high-voltage battery comes with the car. There is no separate monthly battery subscription.
Proton provides a six-year unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty, along with an eight-year or 160,000 km high-voltage battery and EV component warranty.
QV-E buyers, meanwhile, now have two very different routes.

Under QV-E BaaS, battery coverage comes with unlimited mileage and a minimum 70% State of Health (SoH) guarantee throughout the leasing period.
For outright QV-E buyers, the battery instead receives an eight-year or 160,000 km warranty, with the same minimum 70% SoH guarantee.
That creates a genuine ownership choice. Some buyers may value having Perodua carry more of the long-term battery responsibility, while others may prefer the familiarity of owning the entire vehicle, battery included, from day one.
The latest QV-E rebate makes this a much closer comparison, but the answer depends heavily on what you prioritise.
If keeping the initial purchase price low matters most, the RM53,499 QV-E with BaaS now looks particularly tempting, especially considering its 370 km WLTP range and 204 PS output. But you're also signing up for a RM215 monthly battery lease for nine years.
Prefer a more conventional ownership experience? The e.MAS 5 Prime at RM56,800 costs only RM3,301 more upfront, with the battery included. Moving up to the RM69,800 Premium gets you more range and equipment while still costing less than the RM77,499 outright QV-E.
On the other hand, buyers willing to spend more on the QV-E outright are getting the largest battery, longest WLTP range and strongest performance of the options compared here, without the BaaS commitment.
So rather than asking which EV is simply "better value", start with three questions: How much do you want to spend upfront? Do you want to own or lease the battery? And how much range and performance do you actually need? Your answers will probably make the choice between these two much easier.
