Kelantan is exploring plans to expand its electric vehicle (EV) charging network at strategic locations across the state, with private-sector involvement expected to play a key role.
According to Bernama, state executive councillor Hilmi Abdullah said authorities are assessing demand and suitable locations for additional chargers.
The announcement comes as 37 EV charging units have been provided within the Kota Bharu Islamic City Municipal Council (MPKB-BRI) administrative area, while Kelantan had previously targeted 200 charging bays statewide by 2030.
To support the proposed expansion, MPKB-BRI is prepared to facilitate cooperation between charge point operators (CPOs), government agencies and relevant technical bodies, while encouraging private investment.
The initiative aligns with the Kelantan Smart City Blueprint 2040, which identifies commercial areas, institutions and public hotspots as potential charging locations. Suitable sites will be assessed based on demand, EV adoption trends and infrastructure requirements.
Kelantan had also previously targeted 200 EV charging bays statewide by 2030 . This is separate from the 37 charging units reported within MPKB-BRI's jurisdiction.
More public chargers could make EV ownership and interstate travel more convenient, particularly for drivers without reliable home charging or those travelling between towns.
However, charger locations, reliability and charging speeds will matter just as much as the total number available. As explored in our earlier report on Malaysia's EV charging infrastructure gap , network expansion alone does not guarantee a better charging experience.
For now, Kelantan has yet to confirm the number, locations or installation timeline of any additional chargers , leaving motorists waiting for concrete rollout details.
